National Merit Scholarship

Qualifications

You’re eligible for this scholarship if you’re identified as a semifinalist by the National Merit Corporation and you’re admitted to WSU Pullman.  You could earn full tuition for up to four years. Check out important details about National Merit awards at the bottom of the page.

For Washington residents, the award value is based on current in-state tuition rates for 2019–20.

For students from outside Washington state, the award value is based on current non-resident tuition rates for 2019–20.

Exciting Changes to WSU’s Scholarships for Non-Resident Students

We are excited to share that we have made substantial changes to our Western Undergraduate Exchange/Cougar Award program that will provide opportunity for more non-resident students to attend Washington State University than ever before.

Distinguished Cougar Award

With the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)/Distinguished Cougar Award, an out-of-state student may receive an $11,000 award, renewable for an additional three years, increasing from $10,000. Eligibility

Future Cougars of Distinction is for admitted students who have demonstrated high academic achievement. Top Scholars qualify for this event based upon their status as an admitted National Merit Scholar or admitted Regents Scholar or through the table below.

How to qualify

Distinguished University Achievement Award

Graduates

$4,000 per year (two years)

The University Achievement Award is automatically awarded and qualified students are notified upon their offer of admission to WSU.

Eligibility

Awarded to students based on a combination of a minimum 3.4 unweighted high school grade point average (GPA) and qualifying SAT or ACT test scores.

To receive the award, you must also:

Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. (HB 1079 & DACA students eligible)
Be a resident of the state of Washington
Enroll at the Pullman campus as a freshman in 2020

Awards

$1,000 visitation award

In order to qualify for the visit award through the program, students must be invited, registered, and in attendance throughout the duration of the event. The Future Cougars of Distinction visit award can be awarded to students receiving the Distinguished Regents Award, National Merit Semifinalist Award, and to students who will have other allowable tuition waivers or payments that cover the value of full tuition.

Future Cougars of Distinction is the only admitted student program in which students receiving full-tuition scholarships may also receive the visit award.

WUE (Distinguished Cougar Award) and Cougar Award

2020: Distinguished Cougar Award/Western Undergraduate Exchange — $11,000 per year

With the Western Undergraduate Exchange or WUE (here we call it the Distinguished Cougar Award), an out-of-state student starting at WSU in 2020 may receive an $11,000 award, renewable for an additional three years. Awards

Every student who attends the Future Cougars Embracing Diversity event will receive a one-time $1,000 visitation award for completion of the program.

To be eligible for registration, students need to meet these criteria:

Apply for and be offered admission to WSU Pullman for fall semester.
Be a Washington resident.

Please note that registration is on a first-come basis!

National Merit Scholarship awardees, Distinguished Regents Scholars, students receiving an athletic scholarship, or students receiving a scholarship valued at full tuition are not eligible to receive the award.

Experience WSU: Awards

About the award

In order to qualify for the visit award through the Experience WSU event, students must be registered, attend, and participate in all components of the event. The Experience WSU visit award cannot be awarded to students receiving the Distinguished Regents Award, National Merit Semifinalist Award and to students who will have other allowable tuition waivers or payments that cover the value of full tuition. If you are a National Merit Semifinalist or Distinguished Regents awardee, please consider registering to attend Future Cougars of Distinction as the visitation award is available to you for this specific program.

University Achievement Award

The University Achievement Award is automatically awarded and qualified students are notified upon their offer of admission to WSU.

Eligibility
