Chemistry

Pursue scientific advancements with top faculty researchers in the field of chemistry.

Three Paths to Explore

Research in the WSU Department of Chemistry has three primary areas of focus:

Chemistry of Biological Systems

Study reactivity in biological systems and the application of chemical techniques to understand and manipulate molecules in living systems.

Sample topics:

  • Molecular design and synthesis of drugs
  • Neurochemistry of small molecules, their receptors, and transporters

Chemistry of Materials

Understand the atomistic basis of materials synthesis, properties, and behavior, and apply your knowledge to improve materials performance.

Sample topics:

  • Self-assembling nanostructures
  • Catalytic or magnetic materials, semiconductors, and ceramic composites

Chemistry of Energy and the Environment

Sustain and enhance energy cycles, and address the impact of energy production on environmental quality.

Sample topics:

  • Solar photoconversion and energy storage
  • Separations to support advanced fuel cycles

Reasons to Study Chemistry

Diverse Faculty Research Projects

Working alongside world-renowned experts in chemistry, you jump right into world-changing research spanning a range of topics. Find out about the research of individual faculty members.

Unique Chemistry Program

From day one as a Research Scholar, you are on a unique track to prepare for a future in research. You will have access to an exclusive second semester chemistry course with more one-on-one time with your professor and have the privilege of participating in hands-on research as a first-year student.

Here are 10 more great reasons to study chemistry at WSU.

Opportunities in Research

As a Research Scholar, you gain advanced research experience that helps you win grants, scholarships, and entry to the graduate school of your choice. Unlike other chemistry students, you will have the opportunity to participate in research as early as your first year. In addition, you have access to paid summer research opportunities.

If you begin your research experience early and continue for at least three semesters, you may have the opportunity to co-author refereed publications that appear in leading scientific journals.
