Thanksgiving vacation is a great time to recharge before finishing the fall semester! It’s also a great time for your students to sit down with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and WSU’s general scholarship application.

The FAFSA has a priority deadline of January 31 for new students – its right around the corner! While we are unable to offer any Black Friday deals from Student Financial Services, we can offer a tip to make the FAFSA completion process easier thanks to the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT)! The IRS DRT allows students and parents to access the IRS tax return information needed to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and transfer the data directly into their FAFSA from the IRS website.

If you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, we highly recommend that students and families ‘gobble’ it up:

  • It’s the easiest way to provide your tax data.
  • It’s the best way of ensuring that your FAFSA has accurate tax information.
  • No Tax Return Transcripts will need to be provided to WSU.

By clicking “Link To IRS” you can transfer your tax return information from the IRS website into your FAFSA, if you are eligible. If you are ineligible or otherwise choose not to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to retrieve tax information, WSU may require a copy of the applicable IRS tax return transcript (dependent students will need their parent’s tax return transcript).
