First Scholars is a unique scholarship program designed to improve the graduation rates of first-generation college students and provide them with ongoing academic, personal, and professional development opportunities. Our program is firmly rooted in college student development research and as a result, our programming model, systems and tools ensure campus impact and student success. In addition to a significant scholarship, First Scholars receive a combination of individualized guidance, cohort workshops, social and cultural events, group and individual service experiences, peer mentoring, and campus engagement.

The term “first-generation” defines students whose parents or guardians living in the same household do not have a college degree. There is a significant difference in the completion rates of higher education degrees between first-generation students and those who are not. Our program provides engaging and effective tools to bridge the gap. The 2017-2018 application is available online and will close on January 31, 2017. Please note that students need to apply for admission to Washington State University before they can apply to First Scholars.
