In recent years, the college search has increasingly included job placement rates for graduates. Fortunately, Washington State University (WSU) offers several majors with a greater than 90% employment rate for students on the day of graduation. The pay for these jobs is in the professional category (from $39,000 to over $100,000 annually) and the work is related to the students’ area of study.

Turf Grass Management graduates have a 100% employment rate on graduation day, according to the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Retention for the College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Resources, Kari Sampson. WSU Alumni from that program work for organizations across the country including: the 2015 US Open Championship course, the Minnesota Twins, the New York Jets and other professional sports organizations. It is a perfect major for students who like to work outdoors.

If students have an artistic flair, they may want to explore two other highly employable majors, Landscape Architecture and Interior Design. Sampson states that both majors have greater than a 90% employments rate upon graduation.

Construction Management majors usually have 100% employment, and according to Jason Peschel, Assistant Professor for Construction Management the starting pay is often between $58,000 and $60,000 per year. These students are recruited by well-known national and multi-national companies.

WSU’s Food Science Department reports a greater than 90% job placement rate upon graduation for its Food Science students as well. Graduates have gone on to work at many big name companies, including Chobani, Starbucks, the Apple Commission, Alaskan fisheries, ConAgra, Darigold, and Lighthouse.

Shanna Pumphrey, Academic and Internship Coordinator for Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles (AMDT) estimates that AMDT majors have a greater than 92% employment rate immediately following graduation. They work as designers, buyers, merchandisers, analysts, fashion stylists and more. Some companies who have recently hired ADMT students are: Abercrombie & Fitch, bebe, Forever 21, Gap, Inc., J.C. Penny’s, Nordstrom, Macy, The North Face, REI, Seattle Theater, Victoria’s Secret, Walt Disney World, and Zulily.
